Spring 2009 - Introduction to Managerial Accounting - Rutgers-Newark

During this lecture course I was given full responsibility of a class of 50 students for a standard 16 week semester. 49 students completed the course. The structure of the class followed a department harmonization with department-wide exams and a homogenous grading scale. During the semester I mixed traditional ink-enabled, PowerPoint-style lecture with numerous in-class exercises, case studies, and general discussion. For participation credit, students presented current events related to managerial accounting and financial markets and we tied the reactions of specific companies to the topics presented in the lecture, including cost controlling, budgeting, and balanced scorecard measurement. The financial crisis striking the US banking systems and subsequent recession lent itself to engaging class discussions. Extra credit was granted for participation in events sponsored by the Rutgers Accounting Society and the New Jersey Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.

Teaching Philosophy

True education is real, that is to say useful in students' lives outside the classroom regardless of their field of study. I believe students come first and have the right to a great education - an education that encompasses a balance of academics, real-world exposure, high expectancy from themselves and from me their instructor, rigor, and an environment where they have the opportunity to succeed. Students learn in different ways and by incorporating all of the tools that are at my disposal, I hope to help them stay on the cutting edge. I feel that student success in the classroom leads to more success and that will, in turn, benefit our university, our community, and our world.
